The Story of the Autograph

Chuck Cottier is a former infielder and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1959 to 1969 with the Milwaukee Braves, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators and California Angels. He later managed the Mariners from 1984 to 1986.

Cottier is a native of Colorado. He played baseball, basketball, football and wrestled in high school. The Orioles signed him as an amateur free agent in 1954. Over the next two seasons he was moved to a different team outside of the majors and eventually got to the Braves in 1956. He made his major league debut with them on April 17, 1959.

He was traded to the Tigers in 1960 but didn’t play much with them in half a season and then was traded to the Senators in June of 1961. He got his best shot in Washington and regularly played over 100 games for a few years until starting to lose playing time in 1964. He moved on to the Angels for his last seasons in the league and ended his career after sustaining an Achilles tendon injury.

He started coaching in the minors not long after his playing career starting in 1971. He would eventually be the third coach of the Mariners after being appointed on September 1, 1984 from the third base coaching spot. Unfortunately no one lasted too long as a mariners coach in those days.

It’s almost as if Chuck signs on an imaginary line there on the card. His signature is loopy, while in some ways being a little square in a way. I like the little extra piece he puts on his “C”. I’m not sure what you call that but it’s almost like making it a serif font.

Thanks Mr. Cottier! I’m giving this return a 6.
