The Story of the Autograph
Chris Hoiles is a former catcher who played from 1989 through 1998. He spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles. He was a pretty good catcher all around and had flashes of offense in his career which was shortened by injuries.
Hoiles was originally drafted in 1986 in the 19th round of the MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers. In 1998 he was traded to the Orioles in a deal that brought the Tigers Fred Lynn. The next year he made his major league debut with the O’s on April 25, 1989. But in those first two years in the majors he spent more time in the minors.
In 1991 he really broke into the league as the Orioles had traded away Mickey Tettleton and Hoiles appeared in over 100 games. That included 89 games at catcher where he only made one error and had a .998 fielding percentage becoming the fifth rookie catcher in MLB history to win a fielding title.
He saw the Orioles get back to the postseason for the first time since their 1983 World Series. They made it to the ALCS but lost to the Yankees in 1996 and the Indians in 1997. Individually his best season was 1993 when he played in 126 games, hit .310 and 29 homers and 82 RBI (all career highs). He even received MVP votes that year. One of his best individual games would be August 14, 1998 when he hit two grand slams in one game, the first catcher to do so.
Hoiles would be hampered by a bad back and a degenerative hip issue and the Orioles waived him in 1999. He would eventually coach in college and also in the minors as well as work in broadcasting.
The Score on Chris Hoiles – 6.0
Chris has a really solid signature. I like the way that he makes a place to put his name in a circle at the end. I just wish I had some cards that looked better for a signature. The 1990 Score or the 1993 Leaf are really great though.
Thanks Mr. Hoiles! I’m giving this return a 6.
