The Story of the Autograph
Charlie Kerfield is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1985 through 1990 primarily for the Houston Astros, but also for the Atlanta Braves.
Kerfeld was born in Missouri but grew up in Carson City, Nevada. He was drafted three times before signing. The first was while he was attending high school by the Phillies in 1981. The second was a year later as the third overall pick of the draft by the Seattle Mariners and the last was in a later draft that same year as the fifth overall pick by the Astros. At the time he was playing at Yavapai College in Arizona.
He was very successful in the lower levels of the minor leagues to start his career. Although he struggled a little at Triple-A, he was made a September call-up in the 1985 season and made his debut on September 28, 1985 right at the end of the season. He made the big league roster the next year and went 11-2 with a 2.59 ERA as a setup man for Dave Smith. That was a great year for the Astros as they went on to fight the Mets for the NL Pennant.
Unfortunately, not much went right for Kerfield after that. He had a bit of an attitude about going down to the minors after struggling in the 1987 season. He also didn’t think much of other guys getting called up when he didn’t. Then he started having elbow, neck and weight issues as he struggled. He made the team in 1990 but went 0-2 with a 16.20 ERA to start.
The Astros traded him to the Braves, and while he improved, there wasn’t a different place to go but up from that start. He finished out the season with the Braves and then was signed by the Tigers. But he never made it back to the majors and retired in 1991.
Kerfeld was a quirky guys who was known for his antics. After his playing days he coached in the minors and has worked in the front office of some big league clubs.
The Score on Charlie Kerfeld – 5.0
Charlie brought the red marker which we don’t see very often. At least I don’t anyway. Charlie has a good size to his autograph and used a pretty thick marker. Unfortunately it looks like these got smudged a bit. I would guess they were a little wet when they went back into the envelope.
Thanks Mr. Kerfeld! I’m giving this return a 5.
