The Story of the Autograph
Charlie Hough is a former starting and relief pitcher who specialized in the knuckleball. He had an amazingly long 25 year career from 1970 through 1994. Considering the length of his career, the fact that he pitched for only four teams is something. He spent the majority of his career with the Dodgers (’70-’80) and Rangers (’80-’90) before going to the White Sox and then ending his career with the Marlins.
Hough was born in Hawaii but ended up going to high school in Florida where he was drafted by the Dodgers in 1966. He spent the first few years in the minors and it wasn’t until Spring Training of 1970 that he learned how to throw a knuckleball. With a successful season in the minors that year, it led to his call-up and first appearance on August 12, 1970 against the Pirates.
The Dodgers sold him to the Rangers in 1980 and they converted him to a starting pitcher. He made is only All-Star appearance while with them in 1986 and he left after the 1990 season as the franchise leader in wins, strikeouts, complete games and losses.
He was 43 years old while with the White Sox in and was pitching to fellow 43-year old Carlton Fisk. In 1993 he joined the Marlins for their inaugural season and started the first game in the team’s history (a win). He retired after the 1994 season at the age of 46.
The Score on Charlie Hough – 6.5
I’ve always found Charlie to be a reliable signer AND he always does a good job on the cards. I really love that ’78 Topps card (been sending those out a lot lately) but unfortunately that one made the ink bleed a bit. Luckily I think I have another and I can try him again later.
Thanks Mr. Hough! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
