The Story of the Autograph
Buck Martinez is a former major league catcher. He played for the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, and Toronto Blue Jays over 17 seasons from 1969 to 1986. After playing he’s worked as a coach and broadcaster.
Martinez was born and raised in California. He attended college at Sacramento City College, Sacramento State University and Southwest Missouri State University. After college he was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies and then take by the Houston Astros in the rule 5 draft in 1968. But he never made it to the major leagues with either team. The Astros traded Martinez to the Royals where he made his major league debut on June 18, 1969.
He was never a great offensive player with a career high average of .270 with the Brewers in 1979, but having a .225 average for his career. He hit a career high ten homers in back to back seasons with the Blue Jays in 1982 and 1983. And he only played more than 100 games once in his career. He retired in 1986 after coming back from a broken leg and dislocated ankle from a home plate collision with Phil Bradley in 1985.
After retirement he immediately went into broadcasting. He started with the Blue Jays; moving on to ESPN, TBS and the Orioles; and these days he’s back with the Blue Jays. He also had a short managerial stint with the Blue Jays in 2001 and 2002, and he managed Team USA in the 2006 World Baseball Classic.
The Score on Buck Martinez – 6.5
Buck signed five cards for me and all of them look pretty good. He has a solid signature. It’s not small, but it’s not necessarily big either. But he used a good marker and these cards show off his autograph pretty well.
Thanks Mr. Martinez! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
