The Story of the Autograph
Bryan Harvey was a right-handed relief pitcher in the majors from 1987 through 1995. He played for the California Angels and the Florida Marlins.
Harvey was born in Tennessee. He grew up in North Caroline and attended college at UNC Charlotte. The Angels signed him as an amateur free agent in August of 1984. After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut for the Angels on May 16, 1987. He only made three appearances in 1987, but he’d be back with the team in 1988. As a rookie that year he pitched 76 innings in 50 games and put up a 7-5 record with a 2.13 ERA ad 17 saves. That made him good enough to finish second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting that year.
After posting two 3.00+ and 25 save years, Harvey had his first All-Star season in 1991. Tat year he posted a 1.60 ERA in 67 games while saving a league leading 46 games for the Angels. That earned him a top-10 finish in the AL Cy Young voting for that year too. After one more season with the Angels he was left available for the expansion draft and the Marlins chose him with the 20th pick.
He was great for that inaugural Marlins team in 1993. He had a 1-5 record but posted a 1.70 ERA and put up 45 saves. He again earned enough votes for a top-10 finish in the NL Cy Young voting and evened earned some MVP votes as well. He also represented the Marlins in the All-Star game that year.
The Score on Bryan Harvey – 5.0
Bryan has a pretty simple autograph. It’s mostly initials for him and unfortunately because of some of these cards it doesn’t come out really well. Obviously it’s a bit better on the cards with a lot of white jersey and light background like the ’91 Score cards. But some of these are a little dark and busy. A thicker marker might have cut through that a little better.
Thanks Mr. Harvey! These get a 5.
