The Story of the Autograph
Bruce Berenyi is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played in seven seasons between 1980 and 1986 with the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets working mostly as a starting pitcher.
Berenyi is a native of Ohio and played basketball as well as baseball in high school. He would end up attending Glen Oaks Community College where he was first drafted by the Tigers in the 19th round of the 1975 MLB Draft, but he wouldn’t sign with them. Then he attended Northwest Missouri State where the Cincinnati Reds drafted him with the third overall pick in the first round of the 1976 MLB Draft. After four years in the minors he played his first major league game for the Reds on July 5, 1980.
He appeared in 6 games in his first year, but the next year went 9-6 with a 3.50 in 21 games with 20 starts en route to being chosen as a Topps All-Star Rookie. The next years though were a bit tough for Berenyi. In 1982 he would lose a major league leading 18 games despite have a pretty good 3.36 ERA.
In 1984 he was traded to the Mets and be one of the oldest members of their rotation. Despite being traded mid-year he went 9-6 in the rest of that first season with the Mets with a 3.76 ERA. He didn’t play all that much after that but was part of the 1986 team for some of the year. He earned a World Series ring that he would later sell at auction. The Mets released him after the Series and he tried to make it with the Expos but didn’t.
The Score on Bruce Berenyi – 6.5
Bruce has a really nice signature. He definitely fills up the cards with a lot of ink. I think the bad part for these is that they don’t really show off his signature very well. I really never thought I would put a fee up for a guy like Bruce, but when you start to fill in more parts of the collection it makes sense to shove over a few dollars to fill some holes.
Thanks Mr. Berenyi! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
