The Story of the Autograph

Brent Strom is a former left-handed pitcher and currently a pitching coach with the Houston Astros. During his playing days from 1972 through 1977 he played for the Mets, Indians, and Padres.

Strom was born and raised in southern California and attended USC. He helped them to two NCAA Championships while he was in school there. He was originally drafted in the 1967 Draft by the Angels and then again in another phase of the draft the same year by the Giants. He didn’t sign either time. But when the Mets drafted him in 1970 as the third overall pick he signed.

He was first called up in 1972 and made his debut on July 31st of that year. He didn’t do that great with the Mets and in the offseason they traded him to the Indians. He played with the Indians in 1973 but did not appear in the majors in 1974.

The Indians traded him to the Padres where had his best years. He went 8-8 in 18 games with 16 starts and a 3.54 ERA. The next year was good despite a 12-16 record as he led the team in strikeouts with 103. He would appear in only eight games in 1977 and ended up with a 12.42 ERA. He stayed in the minors for a few years and Strom had Tommy John surgery and according to Tommy John, was the second person to have it. He never made it back to the majors.

Brent has a pretty solid autograph. I didn’t have any cards of Brent’s until I got some from a ten cent bin at a card show not that long ago. I was glad that I remember he was on my list to send to once I got some cards. The only one that didn’t come out so well is the ’77 Topps. The card didn’t take the signature that well and it has a little bit of a smudge on it.

Thanks Mr. Strom! I’m giving this return a 6.
