Bill Laskey, a dependable pitcher in Major League Baseball during the 1980s, built a career on consistency, determination, and a love for the game. As a player, he contributed to multiple teams with his steady presence on the mound. In his post-playing career, Laskey transitioned to broadcasting and coaching, further cementing his place in the baseball world.
William Alan Laskey was born on December 20, 1957, in Toledo, Ohio. Baseball was a significant part of his life from a young age, and his talent as a pitcher quickly became apparent. After excelling in high school, Laskey attended Monroe Community College and then on to Kent State University, where he further developed his skills and caught the attention of professional scouts. In the 1978 MLB Draft, Laskey was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the second round. His minor league journey showcased his work ethic and durability, traits that would define his professional career.
Laskey made his MLB debut on April 23, 1982, with the San Francisco Giants. That season proved to be his breakout year, as he pitched 189.1 innings with a 13-12 record and a 3.14 ERA. Over the next few years with the Giants, Laskey became a reliable starter, known for his ability to keep his team in games. His best seasons came in San Francisco, where he logged multiple double-digit win campaigns and was a workhorse in the rotation.
In 1985, Laskey was traded to the Montreal Expos, where he pitched for one season before joining the Cleveland Indians in 1988. Although his later years in the majors were less consistent, Laskey remained a valuable veteran presence and a steady option for teams in need of pitching depth. Laskey returned to the Giants in 1986 for a brief stint. Over six seasons in MLB, he compiled a career record of 42-53 with a 4.14 ERA across 159 games, including 116 starts.
After retiring as a player, Laskey stayed connected to the sport through various roles. He became a popular broadcaster, offering insights and commentary for the San Francisco Giants’ radio and television networks. His ability to break down the game and share stories from his playing days endeared him to fans and further solidified his place in the Giants’ community. In addition to broadcasting, Laskey has been active in coaching and mentoring young players. His deep understanding of pitching and his approachable demeanor have made him a valuable resource for aspiring athletes.
Bill Laskey’s career may not have been filled with headlines or accolades, but his steady contributions to his teams and his passion for the game left a lasting impression. For Giants fans, Laskey’s consistency during the early 1980s provided a foundation for a franchise that was building toward future success.
His work as a broadcaster and coach has allowed him to remain a beloved figure in baseball, particularly in the Bay Area, where he is celebrated for his contributions on and off the field.

The Score on Bill Laskey – 5.5
Bill always has a signature that is on the small side of the spectrum for autographs. He also usually signs with a ball point pen – not my favorite. But for a ball point, this isn’t a bad return. I think my favorite of the bunch is the 1986 Fleer card.
Thanks Mr. Laskey! I’m giving this return a 5.5 overall.
This is my second successful return from him. To see the other return, check out my post from December 2018.
