The Story of the Autograph
Bill Dawley played as a right-handed pitcher in the majors from 1983 through 1989. Over those seven years he played for the Astros, White Sox, Cardinals, Phillies, and A’s. He spent three years with Astros and then a year with each of the other teams after that. He was a relief pitcher for his entire career.
Dawley was drafted out of high school in the 1976 MLB Draft by the Reds. He spent six season in their farm system and then in 1983 he was traded to the Astros. He made the Astros roster out of Spring Training and debuted on April 15, 1983. He got off to a great start and made the All-Star game in his rookie year. He started the year out 5-2 with a 1.88 ERA and then finished with a 6-6 record, 2.82 ERA and 14 saves. The next year he put up some great numbers going 11-4 with a 1.93 ERA and 5 saves over 60 games and 98.2 innings. While he wasn’t an All-Star like the year before, those were probably the best numbers of his career.
The Astros released him at the end of Spring Training in 1986 and he moved on to the White Sox. He didn’t win a game that year and went 0-7. He was traded to the Cardinals during the offseason, then released the next offseason to sign with the Phillies. He was sent to the minors during the season and returned in September. He signed with Oakland prior to the 1989 season and started out in the minors. He appeared in four games but never made it back to the majors after his time with Oakland.
The Score for Bill Dawley – 5.5
Bill has a pretty big signature, but there’s not much too it. It appears as though he signs his last name for the most part. The cards took the signature pretty well and he used a pretty good marker. I guess there’s just not a lot exciting about his signature.
Thanks Mr. Dawley! These get a 5.5.
