The Story of the Autograph
Ben Coates is a former tight end in the NFL. He played from 1991 to 2000 with the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens.
Coates was born and raised in Greenwood, South Carolina. He didn’t play football until his senior year of high school. He went to college at Livingstone College in North Carolina and played multiple sports. Since he went to a small school he didn’t get much notice, but the Patriots drafted him in the fifth round of the 1991 NFL Draft.
The first two years in New England weren’t great, but he blossomed in 1993 with the additions of Drew Bledsoe and Bill Parcells. He put up 53 receptions for 659 yards and eight touchdowns in 1993 and then in 1994 he bested his receptions and yards with 96 receptions and 1,174 yards for career highs. That performance in 1994 brought him his first of five consecutive Pro Bowl appearances and his first of two All-Pro nominations.
He helped the team to make Super Bowl XXXI which was an unfortunate loss to the Green Bay Packers. He would be back to the Super Bowl after moving on to Baltimore and this time would win it after the 2000 season.
After playing he coached at his alma mater and in NFL Europe. He later coached in the NFL with the Cowboys and Browns.
The Score on Ben Coates – 6.0
I had been wanting to send something to Ben for a while and finally found a card of his. His career just covers some time that I really wasn’t getting a lot of football cards. I think I found this one in some type of repack product, probably from a Walgreens or something. He seems like a pretty reliable signer and this one came out pretty good.
Thanks Mr. Coates! I’m giving this return a 6.
