The Story of the Autograph
Andy Etchebarren played professional baseball from 1962 through 1978 with some time interruptions for time in the minors. He played as a catcher and spent time with the Orioles, Angels, and Brewers. He grew up in California and was drafted by the Orioles in the 1961 Free Agent Amateur Draft. He made his debut the next year in September, but then spend a couple more years back in the minors.
In 1965 he was back in the majors with the Orioles. Then in 1966, his rookie season, he was expected to be the third string catcher. But an injury to dick Brown and then Charley Lau he moved up the depth charge and would be an All-Star that year. At the end of that year he was the last man to bat against Sandy Koufax as he hit into a double play in Game 2 of the 1966 World Series. He would help the Orioles to win the Series that year and in 1970 as well as win pennants in 1969 and 1971 and then the AL East in 1973 and 1974. He also made the All-Star team in 1967.
Later on he managed in the minors with the Bowie Baysox, Rochester Redwings, and the Aberdeen IronbBirds. He also managed the York Revolution, an independent minor league team, more recently.
The Score on Andy Etchebarren – 5.0
Just judging by the facsimile autograph on that 1976 top card, it looks as though Andy might have always had a bit of a little kid signature. I don’t mean to knock it, heck, a lot of my family have a signature like that. It’s just the impression I get from it. His current signature is a bit messier though. I like that it’s a pretty good size though.
Thanks Mr. Etchebarren! I’m giving this return a 5.
