The Story of the Autograph
Andy Brickley has made an indelible mark on the world of hockey, not just as a player but also as a beloved voice in the sport’s broadcasting arena. Known for his versatility and hockey IQ on the ice, Brickley parlayed those skills into a successful career as a color analyst, becoming a familiar presence for Boston Bruins fans.
Andrew Brickley was born on August 9, 1961, in Melrose, Massachusetts. Raised in a family with a rich hockey tradition, Brickley grew up immersed in the game. His uncles, George and Bill Brickley, were professional athletes, with George playing baseball in 1913. Brickley attended the University of New Hampshire (UNH), where he starred for the Wildcats hockey team. As a collegiate athlete, he showcased his scoring ability and leadership, earning All-American honors in 1982. Brickley’s success at UNH established him as a promising prospect for professional hockey.
Brickley was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 10th round of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut with the Flyers during the 1982-83 season. Over the next few years, Brickley played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, Boston Bruins, and Winnipeg Jets. While Brickley’s NHL career was relatively brief—spanning 385 games—he demonstrated his value as a versatile forward who could play both wing and center.
Brickley’s professional career also included time in the American Hockey League (AHL), where he played for teams like the Maine Mariners and the Utica Devils. His leadership and experience made him a respected figure in the locker room, and he captained the Mariners during his tenure there.
After retiring from professional hockey in 1994, Brickley transitioned into broadcasting, a move that would cement his legacy in the sport. His deep understanding of the game, combined with a natural gift for communication, made him a perfect fit for the role of color analyst. Brickley joined NESN (New England Sports Network) as the color commentator for Boston Bruins broadcasts. Paired with play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards, Brickley became a fan favorite, known for his sharp analysis, humor, and passion for the Bruins. His ability to break down plays and provide insights into the nuances of the game has endeared him to viewers across New England.
Away from the broadcast booth, Brickley remains deeply connected to the hockey community. He is active in youth hockey programs, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of players. Brickley’s passion for the sport and his approachable demeanor have made him a popular figure at community events and charity functions.
Brickley resides in Hingham, Massachusetts, with his family. Despite his busy schedule, he takes time to give back to the sport that has given him so much.
Andy Brickley’s career is a testament to adaptability and a love for hockey that extends far beyond playing the game. As a player, he brought versatility and leadership to every team he joined. As a broadcaster, he has become a trusted voice and an integral part of the Boston Bruins experience for fans.
Brickley’s journey from the ice to the booth is a reminder that the impact of a career in sports isn’t just measured in goals or points—it’s also about the connections made with teammates, fans, and the wider community. For Andy Brickley, those connections are what define his enduring legacy in the world of hockey.
The Score on Andy Brickley – 5.5
This one was always going to be a tough one for Andy. That’s a whole lot of black to get through on that uniform to make the autograph stick out. And while I could say black-on-black didn’t help, it wouldn’t have been much better with blue. Gotta look for some more cards of his and try again.
Thanks Mr. Brickley! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
