The Story of the Autograph

Andre “The Hawk” Dawson is a former outfielder in the major leagues and a member of the Hall of Fame. He played in 21 seasons from 1976 to 1996 with the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins.

Dawson is a Florida native who grew up in the Miami area and went to school at Florida A&M. He was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 11th rounds of the 1975 MLB Draft and made his debut the next season as a September call-up on September 11, 1976. He appeared in 24 games the rest of the year and became a regular part of the outfield the next season on his way to earning Rookie of the Year honors.

He could do a bit of everything and was the Expos regular center fielder in his early years in Montreal. He could hit for power, he could run and he could play defense. He earned three straight All-Star game appearances from 1981 to 1983 and finished second in MVP voting in two of three of those seasons. He also won six-straight Gold Gloves and three Silver Slugger award in his time in Canada as well.

He moved on to the Cubs in 1987 as a free agent, in part to not have to play on the artificial turf of Olympic Stadium any more. But collusion of baseball owners led to tough time getting a deal. The Cubs eventually signed him and Dawson blossomed again. He won MVP in 1987, made the All-Star team another five consecutive All-Star teams, earned two more Gold Glove Awards and one more Silver Slugger.

Dawson would move on to the Red Sox in 1993 but his career was limited after that. A knee injury he sustained limited him to 121 games his first season there and then he never played more than 79, even after he moved to the Marlins in 1995. It took him some time but he made it into the Hall of Fame in his ninth year of eligibility. His career numbers are 438 homers, 1591 RBI, 314 stolen bases, a .279 batting average, and a career WAR of 64.8.

Andre has a beautiful signature. It comes out really consistently whenever I see anyone posting it. I was glad I had an ’83 Topps card to get out. When I was deciding what cards I would send it was a really tough decisions when it came to thinking about what might be his best seasons and what would show off the signature well. I think in the end I chose two that covered both in different ways.

Thanks Mr. Dawson! I’m giving this return an 8.
