After his playing days, he transitioned into a successful career as an NFL executive, leaving an enduring legacy in the sport.
Alonzo Walter Highsmith was born on February 26, 1965, in Bartow, Florida. He grew up in a sports-oriented family and quickly gravitated toward football, where his natural athletic ability made him stand out. He played high school football at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, earning a reputation as a tough, hard-nosed player who excelled on both offense and defense.
Highsmith’s standout high school performance led him to the University of Miami, where he became a key player for the Hurricanes. During his college career from 1983 to 1986, Highsmith was part of a legendary era under head coach Jimmy Johnson. The Hurricanes captured the national championship in 1983, with Highsmith contributing as a versatile and powerful runner.
Over his college career, Highsmith amassed over 2,900 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns. His physical style and ability to make plays in crucial moments made him a fan favorite and a key figure in Miami’s rise to prominence in college football.
The Houston Oilers selected Highsmith with the third overall pick in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. He joined the Green Bay Packers as a scout in 1999 and worked his way up the ranks, becoming the team’s Senior Personnel Executive. Highsmith played a key role in identifying and developing talent for the Packers during their successful run in the 2010s, including their Super Bowl XLV victory.
In 2018, Highsmith joined the Cleveland Browns as Vice President of Player Personnel, helping guide the team through a rebuilding phase. His leadership and experience were critical in reshaping the Browns’ roster and laying the foundation for their future success.
Highsmith returned to his alma mater, the University of Miami, in 2022 as General Manager of Football Operations. His homecoming marked a full-circle moment in his storied career, allowing him to give back to the program that helped launch his football journey.

The Score on Alonzo Highsmith – 7.5
I really dig Alonzo’s autograph. It’s sharp angles, but also the loops, and loops with angles… it just looks damn good. The marker came out great on these and it’s a really good size on the card. I think I like the 1990 Fleer card.
Thanks Mr. Highsmith! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
This is my second successful return from him. To see the first successful return, check out my post from March 2020.
