The Story of the Autograph

Alan Bannister played for the Phillies, White Sox, Indians, Astros and Rangers from 1974 through 1985. He played in the infield and the outfield. Mostly that meant second base, shortstop and left field, but he played everywhere except for catcher and pitcher at some point in his career.

Bannister was a good college player and was part of a US team that won a silver medal in the 1971 Pan Am Games. The Phillies saw fit to draft him in the first round in 1973. He was very versatile but ultimately didn’t live up to the promise he showed in college. He had five different years where he played over 100 games, but only once, in 1977 did he actually get 100 games at one position (shortstop). He led AL shortstops in errors that year with 40 and led the AL in sac flies. Not stats you really want to lead in.

After 12 years in the bigs and putting up a .270 average with 23 triples, 19 homers, 288 RBI and 108 stolen bases, Alan went on to coach. He managed in the Expos system for two years and another three with the Giants in the Arizona League.

During a tour of Japan as an amateur, Bannister was throwing to first base on a double play and hit the opposing runner in the head. Akira Toumon was knocked unconscious and five days later died in the hospital as a result of a cerebral contusion.

Alan has a scribbly autograph. It doesn’t really have a particular style, but you can see his initials at least. That just makes for it to not be super big or anything like that. It came out find on most of these cards. The only problem was on the 1978 card where it looks like its a bit rubbed off. I’m sure that was just all the cards together in the PWE.

Thanks Mr. Bannister!  I’m giving these a 5.
