The Story of the Autograph

Al Oliver is a former outfielder and first baseman in the major leagues. His eighteen year career spanned from 1968 to 1985. During that time he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Texas Rangers, Montreal Expos, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Oliver is a native of Portsmouth, Ohio. In high school he was a teammate with future major league Larry Hisle. He also played basketball and earned a scholarship to play at Kent State University. But he tried out for the Phillies and Pirates prior to going to college and ended up signing with the Pirates at 17 years old. He made his major league debut on September 23, 1968.

He had some really good seasons with some great Pirates teams and was part of their 1971 Championship winning team. He earned his first three All-Star appearances with them in 1972, 1975, and 1976. He played well enough to earn MVP votes throughout the 1970’s. In 1977 he was involved in a major trade involving the Pirates, Rangers, Braves and Mets and included Willie Montanez, Tommy Boggs, Eddie Milner, Tom Grieve, Bert Blyleven, Jon Matlack, and Ken Henderson among others. In that deal he ended up with the Rangers.

He spent four seasons in Texas and would be back in the All-Star game twice with two Silver Sluggers. He countinued that even after a trade to Montreal before the 1982 season. He would earn his last two All-Star nods there as well as two more Silver Slugger awards. He hit as high as .331 in his career and that was a when he earned a batting title in 1982 with the Expos. That certainly helped him after over .300 for his career.

He moved around a lot at the end of his career. and didn’t playe as much with any team he played for in 1984 and 1985.

I need to find some better cards of Al and try him again. I don’t think I gave him great cards to sign in this one. Al’s signature is a little small, but that at least lets him try to fit it in a good place on the card. I need to get a card of him in a Pirates uniform especially but these are two good ones because he played so well in Texas and Montreal.

Thanks Mr. Oliver! I’m giving this return a 6.
