The Story of the Autograph
Dave Johnson is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1987 through 1993 with the Pirates, Orioles and Tigers.
Johnson was born and raised in Baltimore and attended Baltimore City Community College where he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the fifth round of the 1981 MLB Draft but didn’t sign. He wasn’t drafted again and the Pirates signed him as an amateur free agent the following season. He would make his major league debut for the Pirates five years later on May 29, 1987. He only played in five games that year.
The Astros picked him up in December of 1987 but before the 1988 season started they traded him to the Orioles and he would make 14 starts in that first season in Baltimore. His best season came with the O’s in 1990 when he went 13-0 with a 4.10 ERA in 180 innings. But he also gave up a major league leading 30 homers that season.
The Orioles moved on after a tough 1991 season. He bounced around from there and was back in the league in 1993 with the Tigers.
These days Johnson is back in Maryland and works as an analyst with MASN and the Orioles Radio Network.
The Score on Dave Johnson – 7.0
Dave has a pretty fast and “scratchy” signature. I didn’t realize it but I think I ordered these in a way that shows how the marker might have been running out. The 1991 Upper Deck card came out the best of them all I think.
Thanks Mr. Johnson! I’m giving this return a 7.
