The Story of the Autograph
Bob Skinner is a former outfielder and manager in the major leagues. He played 12 seasons between the years of 1954 and 1966 with the Pirates, Reds, and Cardinals. He also later managed with the Phillies and Padres.
Skinner was born and raised in the San Diego, California area. The Pirates signed him as an amateur free agent prior to the 1951 season. After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut on April 13, 1954. He played in 132 games that first season but wouldn’t be back in the majors until 1956. He had his best years in Pittsburgh and was an All-Star during their 1960 Championship season.
His average line for this career was a .277 average with 12 home runs and 62 RBI. But 1962 was clearly his best season. That year he played in 144 games and his .302 with 20 homers and 75 RBI. He even got some MVP votes out of that performance. The Pirates traded him to the Reds the next season though. With the Reds, and later the Cardinals, he definitely had a lesser role than he had with the Pirates. But he also was part of the Cardinals 1964 Championship team.
He went on to coaching and managing after he retired.
The Score on Bob Skinner – 5.5
While I don’t like the beat up card (which is the way I sent it by the way) for a scoring perspective, you have to admit it give it a ton of character. I love Bob’s face on that card and I’m glad I had that one to get signed. But I’m also glad to have him as a Pirate on one card. Sure he has to share it with his son but I like to have the cards of players where they are best known to play for.
Thanks Mr. Skinner! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
