The Story of the Autograph

Ed Whitson is a former major league pitcher. He played from 1977 through 1991 with the Pirates, Giants, Indians, Padres (twice) and Yankees.

Whitson was born and raised in Tennessee. He was drafted out of high school by the Pirates in the sixth round of the 1974 MLB Draft. After several years starting in the minors the Pirates debuted him in the majors on September 4, 1977. He was back and forth in the minors with the Pirates and was with them until the middle of the year in 1979 when they traded him to the San Francisco Giants.

In the 1980 season he started out at 0-5 for the Giants but turned it around by going 7-3 over his next thirteen starts and getting nominated for the 1980 All-Star Game. He never appeared in the game and it was the only nomination of his career. He moved on to the Indians in 1982 in a trade for Duane Kuiper. But he only spent one season with the Indians and moved on in another trade to the Padres.

Whitson’s 1984 season was one of his best personally and professionally. He went 14-8 with a 3.24 ERA for a Padres team that made it to the 1984 World Series against the Tigers. Whitson pitched well against the Cubs in the NLCS, but not so well against the Tigers in Game 2. He moved on to the Yankees as a free agent for the next two years and then returned to the Padress to finish out his career.

The Score on Ed Whitson – 6.5

Ed has a pretty shaky signature. I would compare it to Geoff Zahn’s which I refer to as a “revolutionary war” style signature. It just has a feeling to me like it should be on some old-timey document like the Declaration of Independence. These came out pretty well though and Ed is a first time signer for me.

Thanks Mr. Whitson! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
