The Story of the Autograph

Rich Amaral is a former major league baseball player. He made it into a game at every position except for pitcher and catcher during his career. He played for the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles from 1991 through 2000.

Amaral was born and raised in California and played his college ball at UCLA. The Cubs drafted him in the second round of the 1983 MLB Draft. He wouldn’t ever make it to the majors with the Cubs though. In fact, he would be drafted again before making the majors. The White Sox drafted him in the 1988 Rule 5 Draft. But again, he never made it to the majors and was a free agent in 1990 when the Seattle Mariners signed him.

The Mariners gave Amaral his first shot on May 27, 1991. He would only make it into 14 games that year, and 35 the next. But in 1993 he got his best shot and made it into 110 games. He’d stick in the majors from there until 2000. That was one of his best seasons as he hit .290 with one homer and 44 RBI.

Amaral moved on to the Orioles via free agency in 1998. He was released during the 2000 season and tried to catch on with the Braves but didn’t get back to the majors. In years since he has coached some, as a baserunning instructor for the Mariners. His son Beau also played for UCLA, getting to the College World Series in 2010 and was drafted by the Reds.

Rich’s signature is one of my favorites I’ve gotten all year. It has a ton of style to it. I especially like that “R” he has, but the style flows all the way through his signature. The other thing I got out of this return is what a great card 1994 Fleer can be for signatures.

Thanks Mr. Amaral! I’m giving this return a 7.
