The Story of the Autograph

Lee Stevens is a former first baseman who played in Major League Baseball from 1990 through 2002. He spent 199 through 1992 with the California Angels. Then after time in the minors and in Japan he played for the Rangers, Expos and Indians.

Stevens was born in Kansas City, MO and grew up in Kansas. The Angels drafted him out of high school with the 22nd overall pick in the 1986 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on July 16, 1990 and the Angels though the would be the player to replace Wally Joyner. But his time in California didn’t pan out and he was traded to the Blue Jays in the winter before the 1993 season.

He never played with the Blue Jays and only played in the minors. So in 1994, he signed with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in Japan. He found his power in Japan and came back to the US to play with the Rangers in 1996. He filled in for some injured players and hie 20 homer runs five season in a row and even had a .300 season in 1997.

He played for the Expos from 2000 to 2002 and they traded him to the Cleveland Indians in for Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew. But what you’ll probably find interesting is that the Indians got Cliff Lee, Brandon Phillips, and Grady Sizemore in that deal. Stevens retired while playing in the minors for the Brewers organization.

Lee has a simple and small signature. Really it’s a bunch of chicken scratch when you look at it. But I think we have to be happy when we see any ink on our cards. A couple of these are pretty dark and hide the signature. I think the ’90 Fleer shows it off the best.

Thanks Mr. Stevens! I’m giving these a 5.
