The Story of the Autograph

Brett Butler is a former major league center fielder. He played from 1981 through 1997 with the Braves, Indians, Giants, Dodgers (twice) and Mets.

Butler was born in Los Angeles, CA but lived in Illinois during his high school days. He tried to walk on at Arizona State but ended up attending Southeastern Oklahoma State. There he led his team to three championships, was the schools first .400 hitter and set records in homers, runs, triples, hits, walks and career average. The Braves drafted him in the 23rd round of the 1979 MLB Draft.

He made his debut on August 20, 1981. The next season with Butler making the team and injecting some speed into the lineup the Braves started the season 13-0 en route to their first division title since 1969. The next year Butler was good again and the Braves finished second in the NL West.

He moved on to the Indians and Giants where he helped them get to the World Series in 1989 before losing to the powerhouse Oakland A’s. Then it was on to the Dodgers where he made his first All-Star team in 1991.

But what Butler may be most famous for is his successful battle against cancer in 1996. He was diagnosed in May of 1996 and fought against everyone’s idea of what was possible to make it back to the dodger in the same season. He played one more year before retiring after the 1997 season.

Brett has a solid signature and it looks really good on some of these cards. I actually like how on the portrait style cards he stacks his autograph and then on the landscape card he signs in a line. The other cool thing is how great that blue marker looks on the Dodger cards.

Thanks Mr. Butler. I’m giving this return a 6.
