The Story of the Autograph

Bob Owchinko was a left-handed pitcher in the major leagues from 1976 through 1986. During that time he worked as both a starting pitcher and releiver. He played for the Padres, Indians, Athletics, Pirates, Reds, and Expos.

Owchinko was born and raised in Michigan and attended Eastern Michigan University before being drafted by the Padres in 1976. They drafted him in the first round with the fifth overall pick. He didn’t take him very long to make his debut as he first appeared in a game later that year on September 25th.

He never had a winning record as a starter. His started more than 20 games three years in a row for the Padres from ’77 to ’79 but came out with a 25-3 record. His best year as a starter was probably 1978 when he went 10-13 with a 3.56 ERA in 202.1 innings.

After his time with the Padres he moved around a lot and only spent more than one year with a team while in Oakland were he spent two years. He finished his career as a reliever and appear in 54 and 49 games in 1982 and 1984 respectively.

Bob doesn’t have a bad signature, but on these cards it just looks like placement is the issue, as well as some other things. He just tends to put it where the cards are busiest. Of course it doesn’t help that the 1978 card is really dark and the 1982 card has the facsimile signature.

Thanks Mr. Owchinko! I’m giving this return a 5.
