The Story of the Autograph

Roger Metzger had an 11-year career in the major leagues. He played shortstop for the Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, and San Francisco Giants. He was a classic light-hitting, sharp fielding, and quick shortstop who spent the majority of his career in Houston.

Metzger was originally drafted by the Cubs in the first round of the 1969 draft. He made his debut in June of the next year. That offseason he was traded to the Astros and that’s really where Roger made his name. In 1973 he won the Gold Glove award and in 1971 and 1973 he led the league with 11 and 14 triples respectively. He also happened to lead the league in outs in 1972 with 528.

His career would be cut short though because of an accident. On November 29, 1979 he lost the tips of four fingers on his right (throwing) hand while using an electric table saw. He was building a playhouse for his kids Christmas present. He tried to comeback in 1980 but was released by the Giants in August while hitting .074 in 28 games. He was a coach for the team the rest of the season.

I like Roger’s autograph a ton. I like it so much in fact that I kind of looked over the fact that it’s a bit small. That marker that he uses is awesome. His signature is recognizable as his name and it’s really right in between a signature and an autograph. You know, like how you might sign a legal document v. a sports card (don’t you do that all the time?).

Thanks Mr. Metzger! I’m giving this a 7.
