The Story of the Autograph

Juan Gonzalez is a former major league outfielder from Puerto Rico. He’s best known as a Texas Ranger where he spent 13 years (in two stints) of his 17 year career. He also spent time with the Tigers, Indians (twice), and Royals in the later part of his career. He could hit the long ball and could drive in runs with the best of them.

He grew up in a rough area of Puerto Rico and learned to it bottlecaps and corks with a broomstick handle. With a .295 lifetime average you can see how that got him locked in for the bigs. He played with Bernie Williams and against Ivan Rodriguez in those little league years, but scouts back then didn’t think he was serious about baseball. I’ve always loved the idea of Juan and Pudge growing up together and then later playing with the Rangers together.

Juan was drafted as an amateur free agent by the Rangers in 1986 when he was 16. Even back then he wanted to do the right thing by his family and where he grew up. His family kept him on the right path. Well, the right path ended up leading to three All-Star appearances, two AL MVP awards, six Silver Slugger Awards as well as leading the league in homers twice and RBI once.

He has an interested nickname and I never knew where it came from. When he was a kid he loved the wrestler Igor the Magnificent. One day he said, “I’m Igor” and his friends kept calling him that.

In these old cards of Juan he looks so little. His signature is a bit small too. But I love the big “J” he has. It’s just too bad he doesn’t continue that into the rest of is autograph. Still, I’m not going to get made about a former MVP giving up his time to sign a few of my cards. I had tried sending to Juan before without much luck. It looks like he’s returning a bunch now though.

Thanks Mr. Gonzalez! I’m giving these a 5.5.
