The Story of the Autograph

Anthony Johnson played as a running back in the NFL for 11 seasons. He was born in Indianapolis, went to high school in South Bend, went to college at Notre Dame (South Bend), and then started his career with the Colts. Definitely looks like an Indiana guy to me. After the Colts he played for the Jets, Bears, Panthers and Jags.

After Notre Dame, the Colts drafted Johnson in the second round of the 1990 NFL draft with the 36th overall pick. In his four years in Indianapolis he played as a running back and fullback. He was primarily used as a receiver out of the back field and his best year in Indy was 1992 when he had 592 rushing yards on the ground and 517 yards in the air with three touchdowns. After the Colts he moved to the Jets and the Bears but didn’t get much time until he went to the Panthers.

With the Panthers in started 11 games. He was able to get 300 carries and make it over 1,000 on the ground with 1,120 total and get to the end zone 6 times on the ground. Throw another 192 yards in the air and that made for probably his best year with 1,300+ total yards. Anthony would finish his career out with a year in Jacksonville where he now is the chaplain for the team.

I’m trying to figure out what exactly Anthony does with his signature. On the 1994 Upper Deck card he seems to write his full name. On the others he seems to write his initials. Does he write “Jesus” after that?  It sure looks like that. I’m not against someone writing whatever they want on the card, I’ve seen some crazy stuff (not that this is crazy). But “Jesus” vs. a bible verse which seems like more of a direct message or motto or whatever is something I’ve never seen before.

Thanks Mr. Johnson! I’m giving these a 5.
