The Story of the Autograph

Nick Pivetta is a starting pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies. 2017 was Nick’s first season in the majors.

He’s from Victoria, British Columbia and was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft. At the time he was playing at New Mexico Junior College. Nick signed with the Nats and began play in the Gulf Coast league. He moved on to the Auburn Doubledays by the end of the year and then spent 2014 with the Hagerstown Suns.

The Nationals traded Pivetta to the Phillies at the trade deadline in 2015 in the ill-fated (for the Nats) Jonathan Papelbon trade. I have to think that no matter what Nick does, that trade worked out better for the Phillies. The Phillies put him on their 40-man roster at the end of the 2016 season and Nick made his debut last year against the Dodgers in April. He finished the year with an 8-10 record in 26 games, but also had a high ERA at 6.02.

The reason I sent to Nick was actually because of Pat Neshek. Pat must have been talking up his hobby in the clubhouse and Nick decided to get into it too. I sent Nick this card and two other cards that I had signed of other players (triples that I had). Pat and Nick put the call out to the Twitter-verse and it looks like it’s worked.

I think in general I’m not a huge fan of Nick’s signature. But what really saves it for me is that it’s HUGE. That’s one of the things that I love when guys sign is that they have a nice and big signature. As long as the card can take it. Nick really uses a great amount of space on the card and he managed to still not sign over his head or anything like that.

Thanks Mr. Pivetta! I’m giving this one a 6.
