John Wehner’s journey through Major League Baseball is a testament to dedication, versatility, and an unwavering connection to his hometown. From his early days in Pittsburgh to his long-standing role as a broadcaster, Wehner’s career reflects the spirit of a true team player.
Born on June 29, 1967, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Wehner graduated from Carrick High School before attending Indiana University, where he played college baseball for three years. His hometown team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, selected him in the 7th round of the 1988 MLB Draft. Wehner made his major league debut on July 17, 1991, marking the beginning of an 11-season MLB career.
Wehner’s versatility was a hallmark of his playing days. He played every position except pitcher at least three times, showcasing his adaptability and team-first mentality. Over 461 games, he compiled a .249 batting average, with four home runs and 54 RBIs.
In 1997, Wehner joined the Florida Marlins, contributing to their World Series championship that year. Although his postseason appearances were limited, he earned a World Series ring, adding a significant accolade to his career.
One of Wehner’s most memorable moments came on October 1, 2000, when he hit the final home run in the history of Three Rivers Stadium. Fittingly, he also made the final out in that game, etching his name into Pittsburgh baseball lore.
After retiring as a player in 2001, Wehner remained within the Pirates organization, serving as a hitting coach for the Double-A Altoona Curve from 2002 to 2004. In 2005, he transitioned to broadcasting, joining the Pirates’ broadcast team as a color analyst for both radio and television. As of 2024, Wehner has spent a total of 33 seasons with the Pirates organization, reflecting his enduring commitment to the team.
Wehner resides in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Brandie, and their five children. His deep roots in Pittsburgh and continued involvement with the Pirates have made him a beloved figure among fans.

John has one of my favorite signatures. So bubbly! It’s really a fun signature all the way through. I think it helps to have the black marker with those Pirates uniforms. And surprisingly there’s no black tops except for the dark tops he has on the minor league cards.
