The Story of the Autograph
Bob Tewksbury’s baseball journey is a testament to resilience, intellect, and the evolving role of mental acuity in sports. From his days as a crafty control pitcher to his influential work as a mental skills coach, Tewksbury has left an indelible mark on the game.
Born on November 30, 1960, in Concord, New Hampshire, Tewksbury’s passion for baseball ignited early. He honed his skills at Merrimack Valley High School and continued his development at Rutgers University before transferring to Saint Leo University in Florida. During the summers of 1979 and 1980, he showcased his talent with the Wareham Gatemen in the Cape Cod Baseball League, earning all-star honors in 1979.
In 1981, the New York Yankees selected Tewksbury in the 19th round of the MLB Draft. He made his major league debut on April 11, 1986, delivering a strong performance that earned him a standing ovation at Yankee Stadium.
Tewksbury’s 13-year MLB career spanned six teams: the Yankees, Cubs, Cardinals, Rangers, Padres, and Twins. He compiled a 110–102 record with a 3.92 ERA over 1,807 innings.
Lacking a blazing fastball, Tewksbury relied on pinpoint control and strategic pitch selection. His best season came in 1992 with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he posted a 16–5 record and a 2.16 ERA, earning an All-Star selection and finishing third in Cy Young Award voting.
Notably, Tewksbury’s control was exceptional; in 1992, he walked only 20 batters over 233 innings, achieving a walks-per-nine-innings rate of 0.77—the best in the majors that year.
After retiring in 1998, Tewksbury pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science in physical education from Saint Leo University in 2000 and a master’s degree in sports psychology and counseling from Boston University in 2004.
He applied his academic knowledge and playing experience as a mental skills coach for several MLB teams, including the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, and Chicago Cubs. In these roles, he worked with players to enhance their mental approach to the game, contributing to the development of athletes like Jon Lester and Anthony Rizzo.
In 2014, Tewksbury was appointed as the director of player development for the Major League Baseball Players Association, focusing on counseling and assisting players with on-field performance and post-career transitions.
Tewksbury authored “Ninety Percent Mental,” a book that delves into the psychological aspects of baseball, drawing from his experiences as a player and coach. The book has been praised for its insights into the mental challenges athletes face and the strategies to overcome them.
Residing in Maine, Tewksbury enjoys a fulfilling personal life, engaging in activities like painting and golf. He continues to contribute to the sports community through private mental skills coaching across various disciplines.
