The Story of the Autograph

John Cullen’s hockey career is a remarkable tale of talent, resilience, and determination. From his collegiate dominance to his professional achievements and courageous battle with cancer, Cullen’s journey has left an indelible mark on the sport.

Born on August 2, 1964, in Puslinch, Ontario, John Cullen hailed from a hockey-rich family. His father, Barry Cullen, and uncles Brian and Ray Cullen all played in the NHL, and his nephews, including Matt Cullen, continued the family legacy.

Cullen attended Boston University, where he became a standout player for the Terriers. Over four seasons, he amassed 98 goals and 143 assists, totaling 241 points, making him the school’s all-time leading scorer. His junior year was particularly impressive, recording 25 goals and 49 assists.

After being selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the 1986 NHL Supplemental Draft but not offered a contract, Cullen signed with the Flint Spirits of the International Hockey League (IHL) for the 1987–88 season. He led the league with 157 points, earning co-Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors.

Cullen made his NHL debut with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 1988–89 season, scoring 49 points in 79 games. The following season, he tallied 92 points, stepping up during Mario Lemieux’s absence.

In the 1990–91 season, Cullen was traded to the Hartford Whalers, where he finished the season with a career-high 110 points. He continued to be a productive player, later joining the Toronto Maple Leafs and returning to the Penguins before signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Over his NHL career, Cullen played 621 games, recording 187 goals and 363 assists for a total of 550 points.

In 1997, Cullen was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, causing him to miss the entire 1997–98 season. After undergoing treatment, he made a courageous comeback, playing four games with the Lightning in the 1998–99 season before retiring. His perseverance earned him the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy in 1999, awarded to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.

John Cullen’s career is a testament to skill, resilience, and determination. His contributions to the game, both on and off the ice, continue to inspire fans and players alike.

John is a great signer from the hockey side of things. He’s a guy that seems to sign everything you send and he puts a good-sized signature on your cards. It’s a big and looper signature and at times can cut through those busy images.

Thanks Mr. Cullen! I’m giving these returns a 6 overall.

These aren’t my first returns from him. To see my first return, check out my post from October 2023.
