The Story of the Autograph
Jim Clancy’s Major League Baseball (MLB) career is a testament to perseverance and adaptability. Spanning 15 seasons from 1977 to 1991, Clancy established himself as a reliable pitcher, most notably with the Toronto Blue Jays, and later contributed to the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves.
Born on December 18, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, Clancy attended St. Rita of Cascia High School. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the fourth round of the 1974 MLB June Amateur Draft. After progressing through the minor leagues, Clancy was left unprotected in the 1976 MLB Expansion Draft due to control issues, leading to his selection by the Toronto Blue Jays as the sixth pick.
Clancy made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays on July 26, 1977. Despite a challenging start, he secured his first major league win in his next outing. Over 12 seasons with Toronto, Clancy became a mainstay in the rotation, leading the American League in games started in 1982 and 1984, and earning an All-Star selection 1982.
Notably, Clancy was the only player to appear for the Blue Jays in each of their first 11 seasons, underscoring his integral role during the franchise’s formative years.
After leaving Toronto, Clancy signed with the Houston Astros in 1989. While his initial season was challenging, he transitioned to a bullpen role by 1991, recording a 2.78 ERA over 30 games.
Midway through the 1991 season, Clancy was traded to the Atlanta Braves. He contributed to the Braves’ postseason run, earning his first postseason victory in Game 3 of the World Series against the Minnesota Twins.
Over his MLB tenure, Clancy compiled a 140–167 win-loss record, a 4.23 ERA, and 1,422 strikeouts across 472 appearances.
Jim Clancy’s career reflects the journey of a steadfast pitcher who adapted to the evolving demands of the game. His enduring presence with the Blue Jays and contributions to other teams highlight a professional committed to his craft and team success.
The Score on Jim Clancy – 6.0
Jim is one of the most reliable returners out there. He signs everything you send him and he returns it pretty quickly. You can see that he has a bit of a messy signature. There are also times where he smudges it. But I will say that even though his name isn’t long, he signs with pretty good size.
Thanks Mr. Clancy! I’m giving these a 6 overall.
These aren’t my first successful returns from him. To see the others, check out these posts:
