The Story of the Autograph

Paul Hartzell, born on November 2, 1953, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, carved out a respectable career in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a right-handed pitcher during the 1970s and early 1980s. Known for his work ethic, intelligence on the mound, and ability to persevere, Hartzell played for several teams and made significant contributions to the sport.

Hartzell grew up in a family that valued both academics and athletics. He attended Central Columbia High School in Bloomsburg, where he excelled in baseball. His talent on the field earned him a spot at Lehigh University, where he further honed his pitching skills. At Lehigh, Hartzell was a dominant force on the mound and drew the attention of professional scouts. In 1975, his hard work paid off when the California Angels selected him in the 10th round of the MLB Draft. Hartzell’s journey to the big leagues had begun, and he was ready to make the most of his opportunity.

Hartzell made his MLB debut on April 10, 1976, with the California Angels, quickly establishing himself as a valuable member of their pitching staff. In his rookie season, Hartzell appeared in 37 games, starting 15 of them, and posted a 7-4 record with a 2.77 ERA. His impressive performance earned him praise as one of the most reliable arms in the Angels’ rotation.

Hartzell’s early success was built on his control and ability to mix pitches effectively. He wasn’t a power pitcher, but his intelligence on the mound and ability to outthink hitters made him a consistent performer. In 1977, he followed up his strong rookie campaign with another solid season, making 41 appearances and finishing with a 8-12 record and a 3.57 ERA.

After his time with the Angels, Hartzell’s career took him to several different teams. In 1979, he was traded to the Minnesota Twins in the deal for Rod Carew, where he continued to be a dependable pitcher. During the 1979 season with the Twins, he made 28 appearances, primarily as a starter.

Following his stint with the Twins, Hartzell played for the Baltimore Orioles in 1980. He then moved on to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1981. He would signed as a free agent with the Brewers a couple times through his last year in 1984. Hartzell’s adaptability allowed him to remain effective. He was known for his ability to pitch in various situations, whether as a starter or reliever.

Following his retirement from baseball, Paul Hartzell transitioned into the business world. He pursued a career in finance and business management, drawing on the discipline and perseverance he had developed as an athlete. Hartzell also stayed connected to the sport through coaching and mentoring young players, passing on the knowledge he gained during his time in the majors. In addition to his professional endeavors, Hartzell remained committed to his family and community. His post-baseball career reflects the same dedication and hard work that defined his playing days.

The Score on Paul Hartzell – 7.0

Paul has a bit of a standard signature from a style perspective. But let’s not that get in the way of a score. He has a good size to his autograph and definitely takes up the card, especially on that 1978 Topps card. He used a good marker on these too so it stands out.

Thanks Mr. Hartzell! I’m giving this return a 7.
