The Story of the Autograph

Joe Washington, born on September 24, 1953, in Crockett, Texas, is remembered as one of the most versatile and exciting players in NFL history. Known for his elusiveness, speed, and pass-catching ability, Washington had a career that spanned nearly a decade in the NFL and left a lasting legacy. Whether it was on the ground or through the air, Washington had a knack for making big plays, earning him a reputation as one of the league’s premier dual-threat running backs of his era.

Washington’s football career began in a small Texas town where he grew up and showcased his exceptional athletic talents. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School in Port Arthur, Texas, where he was a standout football player, excelling as a running back. His ability to evade defenders and his speed on the field caught the attention of top college football programs.

In 1972, Washington enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, where he would cement himself as a college football legend. Washington became the centerpiece of Oklahoma’s wishbone offense, which emphasized a run-heavy attack. Known for his incredible agility and quickness, Washington dazzled fans with his ability to turn small plays into game-changing moments.

Washington’s college career included several standout performances, but his 1974 season was perhaps his most memorable. That year, he rushed for over 1,300 yards, leading the Sooners to an undefeated season and a national championship. Washington finished his college career as a two-time All-American and left Oklahoma as one of the greatest running backs in school history.

His success at Oklahoma led to him being selected in the first round (fourth overall) of the 1976 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. Despite high expectations, Washington struggled to find his footing in San Diego’s offense and was traded to the Baltimore Colts after just one season. It was with the Colts where Washington truly began to thrive.

In 1979, he had a breakout season, rushing for 884 yards and catching a league high 82 passes for 750 yards—showcasing his versatility as both a runner and a receiver and making his one-and-only Pro Bowl appearance. Washington’s unique ability to contribute in both aspects of the game made him a key weapon for the Colts’ offense. In 1978, he made history by becoming the first NFL player to score a rushing touchdown, a receiving touchdown, and return both a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown in the same season.

In 1981, Washington was traded to the Washington Redskins, where he continued to excel as a dual-threat back. Washington played for the Redskins until 1984, then spent his final NFL season with the Atlanta Falcons before retiring in 1985.

Joe Washington finished his NFL career with 4,839 rushing yards, 3,413 receiving yards, and 31 touchdowns. His ability to impact the game as both a runner and receiver made him a valuable asset to every team he played for. Washington’s skill set was ahead of its time, as he excelled in a dual-threat role that has since become a key feature for modern running backs in today’s NFL.

Washington’s contributions extended beyond his on-field production. He was known for his leadership, work ethic, and humility, traits that earned him respect from teammates and opponents alike. Washington’s exciting style of play, highlighted by his agility and ability to make defenders miss, made him a fan favorite wherever he went.

After retiring from professional football, Joe Washington remained involved in the sport. He worked as a broadcaster, sharing his insights and experiences as a former player. He also devoted time to various charitable causes, giving back to the community that supported him throughout his career. Washington became involved in mentoring young athletes, helping guide the next generation of players. In recognition of his college football accomplishments, Washington was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2005. His success at the University of Oklahoma and his impact on the NFL have made him a significant figure in football history.

This is my second successful return from him. To see the first successful return, check out my post from February 2018.

The Score on Joe Washington – 7.0

I love this one I got back from Joe. Maybe less for the signature and more for the card. The card is just so 70’s. The fact that it’s a BALTIMORE Colts card is great. But I think even more is the old school “sports” gogles that Joe is wearing adds to all of it. He certainly isn’t afraid to sign over his head.

Thanks Mr. Washington! I’m giving this return a 7.
