The Story of the Autograph
Steve Walsh is a former quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He played from 1989 to 1999 with the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts, primarily as a back up.
Born on December 1, 1966, in St. Paul, Minnesota, Walsh’s journey took him from college stardom to the NFL, where he played for several teams over more than a decade. His career, marked by both highs and challenges, is a testament to the determination required to succeed at the highest levels of the sport.
Growing up in Minnesota, Walsh excelled in multiple sports, but football quickly became his passion. Walsh’s college career was marked by incredible success. He led the Miami Hurricanes to a national championship in 1987, cementing his legacy in college football. In 1988, he was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, further establishing himself as one of the premier quarterbacks of his era. Walsh finished his college career with an impressive 23-1 record as a starter, showcasing his ability to lead and win at the highest level of college football.
Walsh entered the NFL with high expectations, and in 1989, he was selected in the first round of the NFL Supplemental Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, reuniting with his college coach Jimmy Johnson. However, Walsh found himself behind future Hall of Famer Troy Aikman on the Cowboys’ depth chart, which limited his opportunities.
In 1990, Walsh was traded to the New Orleans Saints, where he became the team’s starting quarterback. That season, he led the Saints to an 8-8 record and a playoff berth, showcasing his ability to manage a game and lead an offense. Walsh’s time with the Saints, however, was marked by inconsistency, and he eventually lost the starting job.
Walsh’s NFL career was defined by his role as a reliable backup and spot starter. Over the years, he played for several teams, including the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Indianapolis Colts. After retiring from professional football, Walsh transitioned into coaching and football administration. He spent time coaching at various levels, including high school and college, where he passed on his knowledge and experience to the next generation of players. Walsh also worked in scouting and player development, leveraging his deep understanding of the quarterback position and the game. He has been the head coach of Cretin-Derham Hall High School, his alma mater, in Minnesota since 2022.
Off the field, Walsh has been involved in various charitable endeavors and community work, using his platform as a former NFL player to make a positive impact. His dedication to the sport and to helping others has left a lasting legacy beyond his playing days.

Steve did a good job on this one. While I sent him more, I love that he’s in a Miami uniform on this card, even though it’s really a Cowboys card. Since his pro career never really panned out I definitely think of him in college more than anything else.
