The Story of the Autograph
Joe Vitiello is a former first baseman and designated hitter in the major leagues. He played somewhat sparingly over a seven seasons between 1995 and 2003, spending time with the Kansas City Royals, San Diego Padres, and Montreal Expos.
Vitiello was born on April 11, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Growing up in the Boston area, Vitiello was immersed in a rich baseball culture. He honed his skills at Stoneham High School, where he became a standout athlete. His prowess on the field earned him a scholarship to the University of Alabama, a college known for its strong baseball program. At Alabama, Vitiello’s power-hitting ability quickly became evident. In 1991, he was named a First-Team All-American, solidifying his status as one of the top college prospects in the nation.
The Kansas City Royals selected Vitiello with the seventh overall pick in the 1991 MLB Draft, a testament to his potential. He made his MLB debut with the Royals on July 29, 1995, after several years of working his way through the minor leagues. Vitiello played as a first baseman and designated hitter, roles in which his power-hitting was his main asset.
Vitiello’s time in the majors was primarily spent with the Royals, where he played from 1995 to 1999. Although he never quite reached the heights expected of a top draft pick, he showed flashes of brilliance. His best season came in 1997 when he hit .267 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs in 89 games. However, injuries and inconsistent playing time limited his ability to secure a permanent spot in the Royals’ lineup.
After leaving the Royals, Vitiello had brief stints with the San Diego Padres and Montreal Expos, but he struggled to maintain a foothold in the major leagues. Despite this, he continued to demonstrate his passion for the game by excelling in Triple-A, where he was known as a consistent and powerful hitter.
In 2001, Vitiello took his talents overseas, signing with the Orix BlueWave in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). His time in Japan was marked by a resurgence in his career, as he found success both at the plate and as a respected veteran presence in the clubhouse.
Playing in Japan allowed Vitiello to extend his career and experience baseball in a new cultural context, an experience he later described as one of the highlights of his career. Following his time in Japan, Vitiello returned to the United States and played briefly in the minors before retiring from professional baseball.
After hanging up his cleats, Vitiello transitioned into a career outside of baseball, leveraging the skills and discipline he had developed as a professional athlete. He remains involved in the sport through coaching and mentoring young players, sharing the wisdom he gained from his years in the game. Vitiello’s journey is a reminder that success in professional sports is not solely measured by accolades and records.

Whoa Joe! That is one great marker he used! This might be one of the strongest markers I’ve ever seen. I actually think it looks even better in an image than it does in person. Not that I doctor the images at all, but I think the contrast comes out better. All of these give him a pretty good place to sign, but my favorite of these is the Stadium Club card. I like the pose, the batting cage, it’s landscape… pretty cool.
