The Story of the Autograph

Warren Moon is a former quarterback and NFL Hall of Famer. He played first int he CFL with the Edmonton Eskimos from 1978 to 1983, then in the NFL from 1984 to 2000 with the Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and Kansas City Chiefs.

Moon is a native of Los Angeles, California. He first went to college at West Los Angeles College and didn’t have much interest from four-year schools. But he ended up at the University of Washington. After a .500 record in his first two seasons, he then led the Huskies on a Rose Bowl run that ended in a victory over Michigan and him being named the MVP.

Despite his success, he was never viewed as having much NFL potential and decided to go to the CFL. He then helped lead the Eskimos to five consecutive Grey Cup victories from 1978 to 1982. He was the Grey Cup MVP in 1980 and 1982. He also was the first QB to pass for over 5,000 yards. He ended his CFL career throwing for more than 5,600 yards and winning the Most Oustanding Player Award. Needless to say he’s a member of the CFL Hall of Fame.

Moon went on to the Oilers where his NFL career started off a bit rocky. It wasn’t until Jerry Glanville showed up in 1986 that things started to get better. He would end up having some really amazing seasons in Houston including back-to-back years with more than 4,600 yards passing in 1990 and 1991. He made eight of his nine Pro Bowls in consecutive years from 1988 to 1995 (into his time with Minnesota). And in 1990, maybe his best year he was the Offensive Player of the Year.

He continued success in Minnesota but had some injuries that then let Brad Johnson work himself into the starting lineup. He would refuse to take a pay cut and back up Johnson later. That led to him moving on to the Seahawks where he would earn his last Pro Bowl appearance and be named the Pro Bowl MVP in 1997. He wen to the Chiefs in 1999 as a back up and retired in January of 2001 after playing just three games in two seasons.

There are almost too many accolades to name for him but some highlights in the NFL that weren’t mentioned above are winning the NFL Man of the Year in 1989 and of couse being part of the NFL Hall of Fame class of 2006.

I haven’t had one of these Pro Set art cards to post ina  while. I really love them and this one is one of the best I think. I love the helmet tipped back on Warren’s head so you can see his face. And there’s a pretty great place to sign the card on that one too. I also love the 1993 Topps card because I love the landscape orientation with that view of the line of scrimmage.

Thanks Mr. Moon! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
