The Story of the Autograph

Todd Jones is a former right-handed closer and relief pitcher in the major leagues. His career spanned sixteen years from 1993 to 2008. During that time he played for the Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers (twice), Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies, Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins.

Jones was born and raised in Marietta, Georgia. He was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 41st round of the 1986 MLB Draft, but he chose not to sign and instead went to Jacksonville State University. He was then later drafted in the first round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros. He made his major league debut with them on July 7, 1993 and played the first few years of his career in Houston. Then in 1996 the Astros traded him to the Tigers with Doug Brocail, Brian Hunter and Orlando Miller for Brad Ausmus, Jose Lima, Trever Miller, CJ Nitkowski and Daryle Ward.

He had worked his way into closing with the Astros and continued that with the Tigers. That led to him having 28 or more saves for four years in a row in Detroit. His best year there, maybe in his career, was 2000 when he went 2-4 with a 3.52 ERA in 67 games. He had an AL-leading 42 saves that year, his career high, and earned his one and only All-Star nod.

The following year was a bit down hill and he was moved to the Twins. That started several years of moving around to different teams until he settled again in Detroit for the last three years of his career. Again, closing out games for the Tigers.

Todd has a boxy type of signature. I say that meaning it seems like it could fit in a square maybe. It can definitely be more vertical than horizontal. But maybe that is partially that he doesn’t have a really long name. It looks like he just uses his first initial, but it’s hard to tell what he is writing with those initials.

Thanks Mr. Jones! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
