The Story of the Autograph
Gary Pettis is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1982 to 1992 with the California Angels, Detroit Tigers (twice), Texas Rangers, and San Diego Padres.
Pettis is a native of Oakland, California. He went to Laney College and from there was drafted by the Angels in the sixth round of the 1979 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for them three years later on September 13, 1982. In his first two seasons he wasn’t with the big club too much and played a total of 32 games.
In 1984 he was part of the major league squad and starting in center field. He had great speed and was a really good base stealer. He would have more than 30 stolen bases in six seasons between 1984 and 1990. His career high was 56 in 1985. That speed definitely helped him in the outfield as he won five Gold Gloves in six years between 1985 and 1990. That covered most of his time with the Angels and a good amount of time he was with the Tigers, where he was traded for Dan Petry in 1987.
After his playing days he went into coaching. Since 1995 he’s been a coach with the Angels, White Sox, Mets, Rangers, and these days with the Astros. He was part of the coaching staff for both of their recent World Series wins in 2017 and 2022.
He’s the father of two NFL wide receivers, Austin and Dante Pettis.
The Score on Gary Pettis – 6.0
Gary signed these three cards from the Astros team address. I normally find him to be a little tough to get a return from. I’ve seen him not return, or only sign a couple. But in this case he signed all three – that’s great. I also like that I have cards of him with each of the teams he played significant time with.
Thanks Mr. Pettis! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
