The Story of the Autograph
Andy Benes is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1989 to 2002 for the San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, St. Louis Cardinals (twice), and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Benes was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana. The Padres chose him with the first overall pick of the 1988 MLB Draft. He would make his first major league appearance on August 11, 1989, after just one year in the majors. He went 6-3 in ten starts with a 3.51 ERA. That helped earn him some votes in the Rookie of the Year balloting. His best season among those that he played in San Diego was either 1991 when he went 15-11 with a 3.03 ERA or 1993 when he went 15-15 with a 3.78 ERA and earned his one and only All-Star appearance.
The Padres traded him during the 1995 season to the Mariners. From there he went to the Cardinals twice and the Diamondbacks via free agency. He had his career best season in 1996 with the Cardinals going 18-10 with a 3.83 ERA. But he has a special place in Diamondbacks history as he was one of the first players in their history when he signed prior to the 1998 season. But he also threw the first pitch in that franchise’s history. He played his final game on September 29, 2002.
The Score on Andy Benes – 7.0
Andy has always had an interesting signature. His “A” doesn’t really look like an “A” does it? But I guess he makes up for it with that “B”. It’s absolutely huge and I love the way that it circles the rest of his last name. I think my favorites of these are his draft pick card and then the Padres uniform with the blue. I would be Padres fans wouldn’t like that I like that uniform though.
Thanks Mr. Benes! I’m giving this return a 7.
