The Story of the Autograph

Bert Blyleven is former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He spent 22 seasons in the majors from 1970 to 1992. During that time he played for the Minnesota Twins (twice), Texas Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, and California Angels.

Blyleven is Dutch and was born in Zeist, Netherlands. His family moved to Canada when he was two and then he grew up in California after his family moved there when he was five. He ran track in addition to playing baseball in high school. The Twins drafted him out of high school in the third round of the 1969 MLB Draft. After just one year in the majors he made his major league debut on June 5, 1970.

He started off his career with six seasons of having a .500 or better record as a starter, including his first All-Star season in 1973 when he won 20 games and led the major in shutouts with nine. He moved to Texas and then Pittsburgh via trade. In Pittsburgh he was with them for their World Series win over the Orioles in 1979. From there he was on to Cleveland where he earned his second All-Star appearance. When he got back to the Twins he was with them for their World Championship season in 1987.

He was the AL strikeout in 1985 and pitched a no-hitter in September of 1977. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011.

Bert has so many cards and was with so many teams that it was a little bit hard to decide on which I wanted to send. I thought the 1990 Upper Deck card was the most interesting… and soooo Upper Deck. And then I figured the 1987 Topps card fit consider it was the year of a World Series win for him and for him being on the Twins.

Thanks Mr. Blyleven! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
