The Story of the Autograph

Chuck Porter is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1981 to 1985 and spent his entire time in the majors with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Porter is a native of Baltimore, Maryland. He was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles out of high school in the 28th round of the 1973 MLB Draft. He didn’t sign and went on to attend Clemson University. He was then drafted again by the California Angels in the seventh round of the 1976 MLB Draft. He spent three years in the Angels minor league system and was released by them in 1980 before that season started.

He signed as a free agent with the Brewers in May of 1980 and made his debut with them the following season on September 14, 1981. In the first two seasons that he received call-ups he only appeared in three games each season. In 1983 and 1985 he got more of a chance. In 1983 he appeared in 25 games, starting in 21 of them and then in 1984 he appeared in 17 games, starting 12 of them. He put up a 7-9 record with a 4.50 ERA and then a 6-4 record with a 3.87 ERA respectively in those seasons.

Unfortunately that was the last significant time he saw. He appeared in six games in the 1985 season with one start and had a 1.98 ERA. He pitched in his last major league game on October 6, 1985 and was released by the Brewers in September of the following season.

I’ve been on a run of some pretty solid signatures. It doesn’t matter if the guys are superstars to me, as long as the put down some good ink I am happy. Chuck did a great job on these. I think the 1985 Topps is a good example of a card that works really well for getting signed. The picture is kind of faded, almost more so toward the bottom. It’s as if it was made to be signed.

Thanks Mr. Porter! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
