The Story of the Autograph

Mark Eaton played center in the NBA. His eleven year career spanned from 1982 to 1993 and he spent all his whole career with the Utah Jazz.

Eaton was born and raised in California. He did play basketball immediately. In high school he was more interested in water polo and after graduating high school he went to the Arizona Automotive Institute to become a service technician. After working as a mechanic for three year he was discovered and went to Cypress College. He was eligible to be drafted after his freshman year there because he was four years out of high school and the Suns took a chance on him in the 1979 NBA Draft.

Instead of signing, he went back to college and transferred to UCLA. He didn’t see much time with the Bruins while there but that didn’t stop the Jazz from taking a chance on him with the 72nd pick in the fourth round of the 1982 NBA Draft. He set a franchise record in his rookie year with 275 blocked shots in 81 games and that ranked him third in the league.

He continued to be a great shot rebounder and shot blocker, leading the league in blocks four times. He was a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, a three-time All-Defensive First Team member, a two-time All Defensive Second Team member, and an All-Star in the 1989 season. He eventually paired with Stockton and Malone to propel the Jazz to success.

He retired as the league leader in blocks per game and the Jazz retired his number. He’s continued to support the Jazz in broadcasts and stay in Utah. He mentored current players like Rudy Gobert.

On May 28, 2021, Eaton died in a bike accident at 64 years old.

Mark was a good signer. I think these are a bit busy and the marker is a bit dull on the one card. I’m really happy that the art card came out so well because I think that card is my favorite of the two.

Thank Mr. Eaton, rest in peace.
