The Story of the Autograph

Stew Cliburn is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played in three seasons between 1984 and 1988 for the California Angels.

Cliburn is native of Jackson, Mississippi. He was first drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 16th round of the 1974 MLB Draft out of high school. Instead of signing he went to Delta State University. Three years later the Pirates drafted him in the fourth round of the 1977 MLB Draft. He never made it to the majors with the Pirates and after five season in the minors as a starter he was released in 1982.

He signed with the Angels shortly after and started working as a reliever. He made his major league debut for them on September 17, 1984. 1985 was his best season with a 9-3 record and a 2.09 ERA. But arm problems would limit him in the next few years. The Angels even released him and resigned him a month later in 1987.

He was back in the majors in 1988 but it didn’t stick. He spent a few more years with the Angels and then the Rangers in the minors. He tried his hand at the Senior League in 1990 before calling it a career. Since then he’s been a minor league pitching coach in a few different places. He’s current with the Chicago Dogs.

The Score on Stew Cliburn – 6.5

Stew has a pretty solid signature. It’s surprisingly shaky, but I like the style in general. That kind of wiggly “t” is neat. One thing I think is silly about these cards is the “Stu” v. “Stew”. You would think if he is Stewart them “Stew” is correct. Not sure how Topps and Donruss got it wrong in 1986/87, but I guess they thought he was a Stuart.

Thanks Mr. Cliburn! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
