The Story of the Autograph

Randy Jones is a former left-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1973 tp 1982 with the San Diego Padres and New York Mets.

Jones is a native Californian. The Padres drafted him in the fifth round of the 1972 MLB Draft. He made his debut a year later on June 16, 1973. After a fine first season with a 7-6 record and 3.16 ERA, he had a league leading 22 losses the next season. But things would turn around.

In 1975 and 1976, Jones would not only be an All-Star, but would be awarded with more than that. In 1975 he won 20 games and led the NL with a 2.24 ERA. He was awarded as the Comeback Player of the Year, but he wasn’t done. In 1976 he was a MLB leading 22 games with 25 complete games and earned the NL Cy Young Award.

After those great years things fell off a bit for Jones. He was traded to the Mets for some of the organizations toughest years in the early 80’s. The Mets released him and he signed with the Pirates in 1983, but was cut before the start of the season.

After retiring he would coach pitchers including Barry Zito. He also owned different businesses like restaurants and car washed and worked as a Padres broadcaster.

Randy has a super-fun signature. It’s got action and it’s got loops. It’s neat but then it’s not perfect. The 1983 Topps card is the best of these but I do love that I got him on cards representing both teams he played for.

Thanks Mr. Jones! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
