The Story of the Autograph
Brooks Robinson is a Hall of Fame third baseman and arguably on of the best of all time. The 18-time All-Star and MVP played from 1955 to 1977 and spent his entire career with the Baltimore Orioles.
Robinson was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. The University of Arkansas offered him a basketball scholarship but he wanted to play professional baseball. A member of his church new the manager of the Orioles and wrote a letter to him. But twelve other clubs were interested in him too. Robinson signed with the Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1955. He debuted later in that same season on September 17, 1955.
The first few years he was up and down to the minors. He also had to work around being in the military. That all built to the 1960 season where Robinson showed the player he would be for his career. That year he started a run of 16 consecutive years with All-Star appearances. He also started a run of 16 consecutive years of winning the Gold Glove at third base, earning him the “Human Vacuum Cleaner” and “Mr. Hoover” nickname. His best year is probably 1964 when he played 163 games and hit .317 with 28 homers with 118 RBI. All of those were career highs and earned him an AL MVP award.
This was also a great time to be an Orioles. During his time there, between 1966 and 1974 the Orioles appeared in four World Series, winning two. Robinson was the World Series MVP in their Series against Cincinnati in 1970.
After playing he worked in TV with the Orioles. He’s always supported Scouting and was on the board of the Baltimore Area Council for Boy Scouts of America. He has three statues made of him, two in Baltimore and the other in York. In 1983, he was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.
The Score on Brooks Robinson – 6.5
Unfortunately I don’t have many cards of Brooks in his day. So I had to rely a bit on new cards for this one. The Gypsy Queen card definitely came out better because you can see the autograph a bit better. But I think in my heart the 1970 Topp All-Star is more fitting of his career.
Thanks Mr. Robinson! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
