The Story of the Autograph

Spike Owen is a former major league shortstop. He played from 1983 to 1995 with the Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Montreal Expos, New York Yankees, and California Angels.

Owen, whose given name is actually Spike, was born and raised in Cleburne, Texas. He played his college baseball at the University of Texas and as a Longhorn earned All-Tournament honors as a shortstop in the 1982 College World Series. The Mariners then made him the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 1982 MLB Draft. Not that long after he made his major league debut on June 25, 1983.

He played well in Seattle and was their captain in the 1986 season. But that didn’t stop the Mariners from trading him and Dave Henderson to the Red Sox in August of that same season for Rey Quinones, Mike Trujillo, Mike Brown and a player to be named later. It was a fortuitous move for Owen, Henderson, and the Sox. The Red Sox made the World Series (great for Owen and Henderson in general), but it was largely due to heroics by Henderson and Owen that got them there.

He was traded to the Expos after the 1988 season and in 1991 and 1992 had two of the best seasons of his career. He also set an NL record with 63 errorless games at shortstop in 1990. He moved on to the Yankees after the 1992 season after losing the shortstop gig to a youngster in Montreal. He finished his career with the Angels after getting traded there after the 1993 season.

Owen later coached and managed in the minor leagues, mostly in the Rangers organization.

The Score on Spike Owen – 7.0

One of the best things I’ve seen from spike is that he uses a pretty big marker. It’s so strong on these cards and it cuts through whatever is going on. He has a solid style for a signature. The “S” has a “5” vibe to it that I like. I’ve seen him signing more lately but this did take almost two years to get to me. Quite the straggler.

Thanks Mr. Owen! I’m giving this return a 7.
