The Story of the Autograph
Fred Kendall is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1969 to 1980 with the San Diego Padres (twice), Cleveland Indians, and Boston Red Sox.
Kendall was born and raised in Torrance, California. He was drafted out of Torrance High School in the fourth round of the 1967 MLB Draft by the Cincinnati Reds. Before he could make his debut with the Reds he picked up by the Padres in the 1968 Expansion Draft and made his debut for them on September 8, 1969.
He spent the next seven seasons in San Diego and became the starting catcher in the 1973 season. That was his best season by far as he put up career highs in homers (10), and RBI (59) with a .282 average. After the 1976 season he was traded to the Indians with Johnny Grubb and Hector Torres for George Hendrick. He spent only one season in Cleveland before being traded to the Red Sox with Dennis Eckersley for Ted Cox, Bo Diaz, Mike Paxton and Rick Wise. He spent his final seasons in San Diego where he went as a free agent.
He later when into coaching as part of the Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies systems and their major league staff. His son is Jason Kendall who played from 1996 to 2010.
The Score on Fred Kendall – 5.5
Fred has a interesting signature in that the way he signs it it almost looks like he is writing “FR” in caps. But what he’s actually doing is appearing to close up his “K”. You can see where his loops sort of tail off and he loses contact with the card.
Thanks Mr. Kendall! I’m giving this return a 5.5. overall.
