The Story of the Autograph
Xavier Hernandez is a former right-handed pitcher who played from 1989 to 1998. During that time he primarily pitched in relief for the Blue Jays, Astros, Yankees, Reds and Rangers.
Hernandez grew up in Texas where he went to high school at Thomas Jefferson in Port Arthur. In 1983 he led his team with a 19-1 record and they won the 5-A State Title. He was also named the Texas High School Player of the Year. HE followed that up by attending what is now Louisiana-Lafayette.
He was drafted by the Blue Jays in the fourth round of the 1986 draft. He made his debut for Toronto on June 4, 1989 and pitched in seven games that season. However he wouldn’t be with the Blue Jays long as the Astros took him in the 1989 Rule 5 Draft. He went on to spend the most time with the Astros than any other team in his career.
His best year was 1992 in Houston when he went 9-1 with a 2.11 ERA. That was pretty impressive considering he appeared in 77 games and pitched in 111.0 innings that year. He followed up with another solid year but his record dipped to 4-5.
These days Hernandez is the pitching coach at Houston Baptist.
The Score on Xavier Hernandez – 5.5
Xavier has a solid autograph, I also like that he signed with two different pens. My only problem wit this one is that some of them came out a little light or they are hard to see. The 1992 Topps card is a bit hard to see even though this picture makes it look a bit better.
Thanks Mr. Hernandez! I’m giving these a 5.5.
