The Story of the Autograph

Willie Wilson is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1976 to 1994 with the Kansas City Royals, Oakland Athletics and Chicago Cubs.

Wilson was born in Montgomery, Alabama and moved to Summit, New Jersey at seven years old. He played football and basketball in addition to baseball. He intended to play college football at Maryland but changed his mind when the Royals made him the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 1974 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut toward the end of the 1976 season on September 4th. His first two years he only made it into 25 games until he became a regular in the 1978 season.

He was a pretty good hitter as his .285 average suggest, but he could also run. He led the league in stolen bases in 1979 and from 1978 to 1988 never had less than 34. During that time he broke 43 seven times. In 1982 and 1983 he was an All-Star. In addition to that he won two Silver Slugger awards, one Gold Glove award and the batting title in 1982. His greatest team success was in 1985 when he helped the Royals win the World Series.

Unfortunately Wilson was part of the drug scandals in baseball in the early to mid-80’s. He was part of four teammates who were caught for attempting to purchase cocaine and that group was the first to serve jail time. Bowie Kuhn, the commissioner at the time suspended him for the entire 1984 season but that was reduced and he started the season in May. Ultimately he was the only one of the group that stayed with the Royals.

Wilson coached in the Blue Jays system in the mid-90’s and was elected to the Royals Hall of Fame in 2000

The Score on Willie Wilson – 6.5

Willie has was I think is a pretty standard signature. You can definitely read it which I like. You also know that I like the blue marker with the blue team colors. That 1988 Topps card is especially great. You can see that the 1991 Topps Stadium Club card rubbed a little bit, probably because it wasn’t try in the envelope.

Thanks Mr. Wilson! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
